The Future of the (HDSLR)Industry

The new generation of short films blows my mind. These DSLR cameras (5D and 7D) give us the ability to have cinematic quality without spending thousands of dollars on a motorcycle-sized cinema camera. The short film (linked below) was directed by a first time director, and made it all the way to the LA Short Fest. Michael Bay (Transformers) somehow saw the short film, and liked it so much that he chose this young director (Po Chan) to be hired as a feature director at his institution.  That is most likely a first, for ANY first-time short film director. Anyone who thinks these DSLRs are ruining the film industry should probably realize the benefit that they have had for people breaking into the industry. Don’t get me wrong though, not just anyone can pick up one these small cameras and make something amazing, it definitely does require a lot of talent and knowledge and pure skill to create something incredible. But now, small-time directors and cinematographers can use these professional level tools to take their creative vision to the next level. i think that this is extremely important if we plan to have a highly-talented generation of filmmakers to fill the shoes of the former-best directors/filmmakers of the last generation. Because back when it was nearly impossible for someone’s idea to look THIS DAMN GOOD, the potential of being noticed or picked up by the right audience was slim, next to impossible without a slew of endless connections. I dont know about everyone else, but i am extremely excited about the new world of possibility that is at our fingertips.
